Vigo Christmas lights: dates, the giant tree and how to get there

Updated October 20, 2026

The Galician port city of Vigo has turned its Christmas lights into one of Spain's best-known winter events. Millions of LED lights cover the centre, a giant Christmas tree and a big wheel draw visitors from all over the country, and the switch-on in November is broadcast nationwide.

When to go

The lights are usually switched on in mid-November and stay on until mid-January. Weekdays are much calmer than weekends and the days around the switch-on.

What to see

Walk the main shopping streets such as Calle Príncipe and Porta do Sol, see the giant Christmas tree and ride the big wheel for a view over the lights and the Vigo estuary. Christmas markets and stalls set up in the centre.

Getting there

Vigo has its own airport and trains to Santiago de Compostela take about an hour, so the lights are an easy evening trip from Santiago.

Weather

Galicia is mild but wet in winter: expect 8–14 °C and rain on many days. Bring a waterproof jacket and good shoes.

Good to know

  • Book hotels early for the switch-on weekend and the December holidays.
  • Go after dark — around 18:00 in winter — when the lights are at their best.
  • Galicia is famous for seafood: try pulpo a la gallega (octopus) and fresh fish.
  • Combine the trip with Santiago's cathedral and old town.
