Christmas in Madrid: markets, lights and New Year at Sol
Updated October 4, 2026
From late November Madrid turns into one of Europe's brightest Christmas cities. The old Plaza Mayor fills with stalls, millions of lights hang over the main streets, and on New Year's Eve the whole country watches the clock of the Puerta del Sol.
The Plaza Mayor Christmas market
One of the oldest Christmas markets in Spain, with stalls selling nativity figures, decorations and the funny wigs and hats Madrileños wear for the holidays. It usually runs from late November to 31 December.

Lights, the big tree and nativity scenes
The lights usually shine from late November to early January along Calle Mayor, Gran Vía, Calle de Alcalá and Calle Preciados. A giant tree stands in the Puerta del Sol, and large nativity scenes (belenes) are displayed around the centre.

With children
Cortylandia, the animated Christmas show on the El Corte Inglés building in Calle Preciados, has been a Madrid tradition since the late 1970s. On 5 January the Three Kings parade passes through the centre of the city.
New Year's Eve at the Puerta del Sol
Thousands gather under the clock to eat the 12 grapes at midnight. Entry to the square is controlled and space is limited, so arrive early. The night before, many people come for the “preuvas”, a rehearsal with sweets instead of grapes.
Good to know
- Visit the Plaza Mayor market in the morning or early afternoon; evenings are very crowded.
- Keep an eye on your bag in the crowds around Sol and Preciados.
- Madrid is cold in December, often close to 0 °C at night — bring a warm coat.
- Book restaurants for 24 and 31 December well in advance.
